Shadow Tune for Space YZ O-Day! curated by Daniel Mudie - Cunningham

Shadow tune was a theremin installation created for O- Day! at Campbeltown Arts Centre as a part of the Space YZ exhibition curated by Daniel Mudie-Cunningham. This installation was positioned at the gallery entrance for one day during the O- Day! event for kids and families in January 2021.

A theremin is an electronic instrument that is played without physical contact. A novel instrument for the current covid times. This installation is made to experience sound in a surprising way. A theremin is activated by a person coming in close contact with it, by hovering hands near 2 antennas on the top and side of the instrument. One antennae controls pitch and the other controls volume. The installation will be activated by people passing through and around the instruments. Sound interactions will occur between the person/s with 6-7 theremins set up in the main thoroughfare of the CAC space. These instruments will also tune into each other and at times create feedback. This experience is designed to highlight the in between spaces of objects and bodies, making them interactive and audible.

The tape installed on the floor tiles placed the theremins inside a frame within the open entrance space, as well as creating a map for audiences to walk through.
